Okay, so, I’ve been wanting to get back into gymnastics for a while now. It’s been years, but I used to love it as a kid. I finally decided to just go for it and signed up at a place called AKM United Stars Gymnastics Academy. Seemed like a cool spot, and they had really good reviews. It’s this place on McCormick Road, not too far from me, actually.
First things first, I checked out their classes and fees online. They had this whole enrollment thing, and I registered for their school year session that starts in September. Felt pretty official, you know? Filling out forms and all that.
My first day, I was nervous, not gonna lie. But everyone was super welcoming. I met a bunch of people, some who were just starting out like me, and others who were clearly way more experienced. We started with some basic warm-ups, which honestly kicked my butt. I was definitely out of shape.
We did some stretches, some light cardio, and then moved on to some basic exercises. Think push-ups, sit-ups, squats, and stuff like that. I was dying, but in a good way, you know? It felt good to be moving again.
- I tried the handstand practice which was a classic move and it was a bit of a struggle, but the instructor was really helpful, gave me some pointers, and I actually held it for a few seconds longer than I thought I could. Progress!
- Then, we moved on to some basic tumbling. Forward rolls, backward rolls, and even attempted a couple of cartwheels. Let me tell you, my cartwheels were… interesting. Definitely need some work there.
The gym had all sorts of equipment that we didn’t really use that day. Bars, beams, a tumble track. It’s all pretty intimidating at first, but exciting at the same time. It was a great first step, and I was stoked. I decided that I would go to the gym’s drop-in class whenever I could. Plus, the coaches were all really encouraging, even though I was clearly a beginner among some pretty talented people.
By the end of that first session, I was exhausted but also really pumped. It’s definitely going to be a challenge, but I’m excited to see how far I can go. It’s tough starting as an adult, but everyone says it’s totally doable. I’m just taking it slow, building up my strength, and trying to enjoy the process. And I also do some basic exercises at home by myself. It’s a good start.
It’s been a few weeks now, and I’m already feeling stronger.
My handstands are getting better, my cartwheels are slightly less embarrassing, and I’m not as sore after each session. I am trying to push myself. It’s cool to be part of a community that’s all about pushing your limits and supporting each other. It is a good way to get back in shape. I’ll keep you guys updated on my progress. Wish me luck!
