Okay, so I’ve been messing around with my driver lately, trying to get that “Jason Day” feel, you know? It all started when I saw a video of him just crushing it off the tee. I was like, “I gotta figure this out.”

First thing I did was watch a ton of slow-motion videos of his swing. I mean, a lot. I was looking at everything – his grip, his stance, how he takes the club back, everything.
My Practice breakdown
Then, I hit the range. And let me tell you, it wasn’t pretty at first. I was slicing, hooking, topping… you name it. But I kept at it. I started by just trying to mimic his setup.
- I made sure to use strong grip like he does.
- Widened my stance a little bit.
- Tried to get that feeling of being really “connected” to the ground.
The next few range sessions were all about the takeaway. I focused on keeping the club low to the ground for the first few feet, just like Day does. I think I pulled a muscle in my back trying to do that, seriously. It felt so awkward at first, but slowly, it started to feel more natural.
Then came the hard part – the downswing. I’ve always struggled with coming over the top, and Day’s swing is so “in-to-out” it’s crazy. I spent hours just trying to get that feeling of dropping the club into the slot. I used alignment sticks, recorded my swing on my phone, the whole nine yards.
Honestly, the biggest thing that helped was this one drill I found online. You basically put a headcover just outside the ball, and the goal is to swing without hitting the headcover. It forces you to swing from the inside. I must have done that drill a thousand times.
After weeks of this, I finally started to see some results. My drives were going straighter, and definitely longer. I even had a few that felt… well, effortless. Like I was barely swinging and the ball just exploded off the face. I still have good and bad days.
It’s still a work in progress, of course. I’m not hitting it 350 yards like Jason Day or anything, but I’m definitely better than I was. This whole process has been frustrating, but also super rewarding.
