Okay, so I was watching a basketball game the other day, and I got into this whole thing about how long each quarter actually is. I mean, we all say it’s 12 minutes, but is it really? So, I decided to time it myself. Here’s what I did:

My Little Experiment
First, I grabbed my phone and opened the stopwatch app. I made sure I had the game on – I was watching an NBA game, by the way.
- I started the stopwatch right when the first quarter officially began, you know, after the tip-off.
- Then, I just… watched! Every time the clock stopped in the game – fouls, timeouts, whatever – I paused my stopwatch too.
- I kept doing that, starting and stopping the stopwatch, all through the first quarter.
Guess what the time I record? You will be surprised.
It was 12 minutes! I did the same thing for the next couple of quarters, just to be sure, and yep, 12 minutes each. It’s kind of cool to see it play out in real-time, even though it seems obvious.
So, there you have it – straight from my stopwatch, a basketball quarter is, in fact, 12 minutes of actual game time, at least in the NBA. Now, if we’re talking about how long it feels like a quarter lasts with all the breaks, that’s a whole different story!
