Alright, so I got it in my head that I wanted to see if I could even get close to those insane vertical jumps you see from NBA players. I mean, those guys are flying! I’m no athlete, just a regular dude, but I figured, why not give it a shot? See what I could do.
First thing I did was look up some stuff online. ‘Best vertical jump NBA’ – that’s what I typed in. Got a bunch of videos and articles, some helpful, some not so much.
My Starting Point (It Wasn’t Pretty)
I started by just… jumping. Seriously, that’s it. I put a piece of tape on the wall where I could reach standing flat-footed, then I jumped and slapped another piece of tape as high as I could. Measured the difference. Let’s just say it wasn’t impressive. We’re talking maybe, maybe 20 inches. Pathetic, right?
The “Training” (If You Can Call It That)
I didn’t have any fancy equipment, so I kept it simple. I did a few things, pretty inconsistently, to be honest:
- Squats: Figured these were a must. Bodyweight squats at first, then I tried holding some water jugs for extra weight. My form was probably terrible.
- Jumping Jacks: Yeah, basic, I know. But it got my heart rate up and worked my legs a little.
- Calf Raises: Standing on the edge of a step, going up on my toes, then back down. Burned like crazy after a while.
- Just…Jumping: I’d just jump around, trying to touch the ceiling, or a tree branch, whatever. Felt like a kid again.
I did this stuff maybe 3-4 times a week, whenever I felt like it. No real schedule, no real plan. Just me, flailing around.
The Results (Slightly Less Pathetic)
After a few weeks, I tested my jump again. Same tape method. This time? Drumroll… about 24 inches! Okay, so it’s not NBA level, not even close. But hey, it’s an improvement! 4 inches is 4 inches.
It was kind of fun, actually. Made me realize how much work those pro athletes put in. It’s insane. I’m definitely not going to be dunking anytime soon, but at least I can jump a little higher than before. Maybe I’ll keep at it, just for kicks. Who knows, maybe I’ll hit 25 inches someday. A guy can dream, right?
