Well now, let me tell ya, there’s this young fella, Edgar Alvarez. Folks been talkin’ ’bout him and this baseball draft thing. I ain’t no expert, mind you, but I hear tell he’s somethin’ special.
Edgar Alvarez, huh? What’s all the fuss about?
Seems like this Edgar boy, he plays first base, and he’s a big ‘un. They say he’s 6-foot-4! That’s taller than old man Johnson’s barn, I reckon. And he can hit that ball too. I heard someone sayin’ he’s got a .411 battin’ average. Now, I don’t know what all that means exactly, but it sounds mighty impressive. Ninety hits, they say! That’s a whole lotta hittin’, ain’t it?

This baseball draft, it’s like a pickin’ game, I guess. The teams, they line up and choose the players they want. And from what I gather, this Edgar boy, he got picked pretty high up. The Chicago Cubs, that’s who took him. They’re a big city team, I hear. Eighth round, they say. Don’t rightly know what that means, but it sounds important. He’s the first fella from his school, Nicholls State, to get drafted in a long while. Since ’17, someone was sayin’. And the highest pick since ’15. This boy’s makin’ history, it seems.
The Cubs, they gave him a bonus too. Money, I reckon. Almost ten million dollars, or somethin’ like that. That’s more money than I’ve seen in my whole life! This boy’s gonna be richer than old Mrs. Henderson, and she owns half the county, or so they say.
They talk about his strengths and his future. I guess that means what he’s good at and how good he might become. They say he ain’t got the usual power you’d expect from a fella his size. But he can hit that ball, that’s for sure. And maybe he’ll get stronger, who knows? He’s young yet.
This draft thing, they do it every year, it seems. And they got this lottery thing to decide who picks first. Started last year, in 2023. Sounds complicated to me. But I guess it’s fair, somehow. Makes sure everyone gets a chance, maybe.
Now, I don’t watch much baseball myself. Too busy with the chickens and the garden. But I hear folks talkin’, and this Edgar Alvarez, he’s the talk of the town, or at least the talk of the baseball folks. They say he’s got a bright future. Maybe he’ll be famous one day. Maybe he’ll even come back and visit our little town. Wouldn’t that be somethin’? A big baseball star, comin’ from right here, well, not right here, but from a place kinda like here.
So, there you have it. That’s what I know about this Edgar Alvarez and the baseball draft. Not much, maybe, but enough to make an old woman proud, even if I don’t know him from Adam. He sounds like a good boy, a hard worker. And that’s somethin’ to be admired, no matter what you do in life.
