Alright, so you wanna know about them 2008 St. Louis Cardinals, huh? Well, let me tell ya, that was a year, that’s for sure. They weren’t the best, weren’t the worst, just kinda… there. Finished fourth in their division, the NL Central, with a record of 86 wins and 76 losses. Not too shabby, but not good enough to brag about neither.
Now, who was on that team? Well, we had some good fellas, some real workhorses. You had this fella, Yadier Molina, the catcher. Tough as nails, that one. They signed him to a good contract that year, kept him around for a while. He was the starting catcher, no doubt about it.
Then there was Albert Pujols. Oh, that boy could hit! Drove in 116 runs, batted .357. He was the best hitter on the team, no question. If you needed a hit, Albert was your man. He was a real star, that one.
- Yadier Molina – Catcher, tough guy.
- Albert Pujols – First baseman, hitter extraordinaire.
And the pitchers? Well, Kyle Lohse, he was the one who won the most games, 15 of ’em. He wasn’t a fancy fella, just got the job done. Kept the other team from scoring, mostly. That’s what you want in a pitcher, ain’t it?
The manager, that was Tony LaRussa. He’s been around the block a few times, knows his baseball. He managed that team, made the decisions. Some good, some bad, just like life, I reckon.
They talk about all these fancy stats now, like OBP and WAR and all that. I don’t know much about that stuff. Back in my day, you just looked at how many games they won and how many they lost. And if they hit the ball hard, that was good enough for me. But I hear tell these youngsters like all them numbers, so there ya go.
Now, some folks say the Cardinals got a long history, been around since 1882. Won a bunch of World Series, they say. Eleven, I think. And lots of pennants too. That’s a lot of winning, I tell ya. They talk about guys like Stan Musial and Rogers Hornsby, real legends, they say. Hit .400 some years! Can you believe that? Nowadays, .300 is good enough. Times change, I guess.
But this 2008 team, they weren’t no legends. They were just a bunch of guys trying to play some baseball. Some days they were good, some days they were bad. That’s just how it is. They had some good players, like I said, Molina and Pujols, and Lohse. But they didn’t have enough, I guess, to go all the way. They finished fourth, like I said, and that was that. No playoffs, no World Series. Just another season.
So, that’s the story of the 2008 St. Louis Cardinals, as best as I can tell ya. They were a team, they played baseball, and they weren’t too bad. But they weren’t too good neither. Just a regular team, playing a regular season. And that’s all there is to it, I reckon.
2008 St. Louis Cardinals Roster Summary: Like I said, Molina was the catcher, Pujols was the big hitter at first base, and Lohse was the pitcher who got them the most wins. LaRussa was the manager. They won 86 games and lost 76. Finished fourth. Not bad, not great. That’s it in a nutshell.
Anyways, that’s all I got to say about it. It wasn’t the best team they ever had, but they weren’t the worst neither. They tried hard, and sometimes that’s all you can ask for.
