Well, let me tell ya ’bout them 2017 Oklahoma Sooners, that football team. Heard a whole lot of fuss ’bout ’em back then, and lemme see if I can get it straight for ya. They had this fella, Baker Mayfield, yeah, that’s the one. Folks were always hollerin’ ’bout him, said he was somethin’ special. He was their quarterback, you know, the one who throws the ball.
Now, this Lincoln Riley fella, he was the coach. Brand new coach, they said. First year and all. Folks were kinda worried, you know, new coach and all, but he seemed to do alright. They won a bunch of games, that’s for sure. I remember hearin’ ’bout ’em on the radio, always winnin’.

They had a whole bunch of other boys on that team, too. Can’t remember all their names, but there was this Kennedy Brooks, a running back. He was a young fella, just a freshman. Ran real fast, they said. And then there was Marquise Brown, a receiver. They called him “Hollywood,” can you believe it? Guess he was quick, too. All these young fellas runnin’ around, it’s a wonder they didn’t trip over their own feet!
They was playin’ in somethin’ called the FBS, that’s college football, I reckon. Big deal, folks said. Lots of games, lots of travelin’. Heard they went all over the place, playin’ different teams. Oklahoma City, that’s where some of them boys came from. And Mansfield, Texas, too. All over, just like I said.
Now, I ain’t no expert, but I heard tell they was pretty good that year. Won a lot of games, like I said before. Folks were talkin’ ’bout them goin’ to the championships and all that. Don’t rightly remember how it all ended up, but they sure made a lot of noise. Always hearin’ ’bout ’em on the news and such.
They had this big ol’ roster, you know, a list of all the players. Must’ve been a hundred of ’em, maybe more. All shapes and sizes, I bet. Big fellas, little fellas, fast fellas, strong fellas. Takes all kinds, I guess, to make a football team. It’s hard work, that football. Runnin’ and jumpin’ and smashin’ into each other. Don’t know how they do it, honestly.
This 2017 team, they was the 123rd Sooner football team, so they say. Been playin’ football for a long, long time, them Sooners. Guess it’s a big deal down there in Oklahoma. Folks get real worked up about it. Cheerin’ and hollerin’ and wearin’ them funny colors. Red and white, I think it was. Always seemed a bit too bright for my taste, but to each their own, I say.
Anyways, that’s ’bout all I can remember ’bout them 2017 Oklahoma Sooners. Good team, fast fellas, new coach. They made a splash, that’s for sure. Now, where did I put my glasses? Can’t see nothin’ these days… Oh, and I almost forgot, they had all sorts of people tryin’ to guess who’d win before the games even started. Made a whole thing out of it, they did. And they kept track of who was runnin’ the most and catchin’ the most. Stats, they called ’em. Always countin’ somethin’, those folks.
So yeah, that was the 2017 Sooners team. A bunch of young fellas playin’ football and makin’ a name for themselves. And that’s all there is to it, as far as I’m concerned.
