Alright, so, I tried out this “shamble” thing in golf the other day. Never heard of it before, but it sounded kinda fun. Basically, we all tee off like usual, and then we pick the best drive out of the group. Sounded easy enough, right?
So, we got this group, four of us. Let’s just say I’m not the best golfer, but I can hit it okay sometimes. We marked each other, you know, A, B, C, and D. I was C, just for the record. First hole, we all swing. My buddy, let’s call him “Big John” cause he’s a big dude, he crushes it. I mean, way out there. Naturally, we picked his drive.
Here’s where it gets interesting. From where Big John’s ball landed, we all get to play our own ball. So, I’m feeling good, right? Great starting point. I take my swing, and boom, I mess it up! Shanked it right into the trees. But, my other buddy, we will call him “Silent Bob” cause he does not talk much, he nails it. Straight down the fairway. This happened on a few holes, me messing up a good opportunity. It’s frustrating, but also kinda funny in a way.
We kept going like this, each hole picking the best drive and then playing our own ball from there. I started to get the hang of it, sort of. My drives were all over the place, but I started to get better at those second shots. My putting was even pretty good, not sure where I picked up this skill, I seem to have it now. Still, I felt like I was bringing the team down a bit.
- First hole: Picked Big John’s drive, I shanked it, Silent Bob was golden.
- Second hole: My drive wasn’t terrible, but we went with Silent Bob’s. I did okay from there.
- Midway through: I was a roller coaster. Some good shots, some terrible ones.
- Near the end: I actually started to contribute a bit more. Go figure.
By the end of it, I was exhausted. It was fun, sure, but also a lot of pressure. You don’t want to be the guy who ruins it for everyone. It’s a team thing, you know? We added up the scores, and well, we didn’t win. But, we didn’t come in last either, so I guess that’s something.
Would I do it again? Probably. It’s a nice change from the usual game. Plus, it’s a good way to learn from better players. I might not be a “shamble” expert, but hey, I gave it a shot. And that’s all that matters, right?
One thing I learned, team composition is kinda key in this thing. You need someone who can consistently hit those long drives, and then a few others who are good at different parts of the game. It is a team effort after all. We will try this again, see if we do better next time.
I don’t think I am going to try to give any advice, but you know, just give it a go. Maybe you are the one who can help your team out, who knows?
