So, I’ve been digging into this guy, Wilbert Montgomery, and let me tell you, it’s been a ride. I started off knowing nothing, just a name, right? Wilbert Montgomery. Sounds like a regular dude.
First thing I did was to hit up the search engines. Typed in “Wilbert Montgomery” and boom! A whole bunch of stuff popped up. Turns out, this guy was a big-time football player. Played for the Eagles and the Lions, which I found out after reading a couple of articles.
Then, I got into the stats. Man, this guy was good. I found out that he ran the 100-yard dash in 9.6 seconds. Can you believe that? And he was 5’10”, 195 pounds. That’s some solid build for a running back.
Here’s where it gets interesting:
- I learned that he had 1,540 carries for 6,789 yards. I mean, that’s a lot of yards!
- And get this, he also had 273 catches for 2,502 yards. This guy wasn’t just running the ball, he was catching it too.
Diving deeper, I found out he was born in 1954, in Greenville, Mississippi. Went to college at Jackson State, which I had never heard of, to be honest. After that, I looked into his life after playing. He was a coach in the NFL from 1997 to 2015.
The Awards
He got the Abilene Christian University Alumni Citation Award in ’79 and was inducted onto the inaugural Philadelphia Eagles Honor Roll in ’87. This tells me he was respected not just for his playing, but also for who he was off the field.
Also I find that his net worth is estimated at $2 million. Not bad for a guy who played in the NFL, right? That is how a regular name made me amazed. It’s been a fun deep dive. You never know what you’ll find when you start digging into someone’s past. It just goes to show, there’s always more to the story than meets the eye.
