Okay, so I gotta tell you about this absolute nightmare I had with the latest MTG set. The Burrowed set, man, what a disaster. I was so hyped for it, you know? I mean, I’ve been playing Magic: The Gathering since, like, forever. I even remember when Standard was called Type 2, back in the day when it first rolled out. Nostalgia hit me hard, right? But this set? Big oof.
So, I started by, obviously, buying a bunch of packs. I love the thrill of cracking open new packs, the smell of the fresh cards and the anticipation of finding something amazing, you know? It is kind of like opening a gift. And, like an idiot, I went all in, dropped a decent chunk of change on it too. When I first looked at it, it reminded me of when I opened the Guilds of Ravnica set. It made me feel really good at that time.
I tore into those packs like a kid on Christmas morning. First few were okay, some decent cards, nothing crazy, just so-so. But then, as I got deeper, things started to get weird. Like, really weird. I started to notice something was off with the cards themselves. The cardstock felt wrong, you know? Like, thinner than usual, kind of flimsy. They didn’t feel right when I bent one a little bit; they were easy to crease.
And then there were the mechanics. Ugh, don’t even get me started. They introduced these things called, like, “Devoid” and “Ingest” or something. Sounded cool on paper, but in practice? Clunky, man. Just super clunky and didn’t really mesh well with anything else I had going on in my deck. It felt like they just threw them in there to be different, not because they actually made the game better. I think the worst modern Magic set is this one.
I tried, I really did. I brewed up a bunch of different decks, trying to make it work. I spent hours, days even, trying to find some synergy, some strategy that would make this set click for me. I did everything I could think of to see the good in it.
Nothing. It was just bad. Every game I played with these new cards was a frustrating mess. It felt like I was playing a different game, and not in a good way. Even when I played with my buddies, they felt the same way. A few of them just refused to use the new cards altogether.
So, yeah, that’s my story. I’m pretty bummed about it, not gonna lie. I wasted a good amount of money, a ton of time, and a whole lot of excitement on this set. It’s definitely the worst MTG set I’ve ever played with, hands down. It’s fair to say that it’s been an awful experience.
It is safe to say that this set is a huge disappointment. I mean, even though I got some good cards, it’s not a good set. It made me feel really bad. I even started to think I got some fake cards. I’ve heard there are a lot of fakes floating around these days. It’s not like the Lord of the Rings set, which was a good one, in my opinion.
Anyways, just wanted to share my experience. Maybe it’s just me, maybe I’m missing something, but I doubt it. If you’re thinking about diving into the Burrowed set, I’d say save your money. Or at least, you know, temper your expectations. A lot.
