Okay, so, I’ve been getting into Canadian football lately, and I gotta say, the field size is wild compared to what I’m used to with American football. I mean, it’s like they took our field and stretched it out like taffy.
So, I figured, why not dig into the exact measurements of a CFL field? I grabbed a measuring tape, you know, one of those long ones, and headed down to a local field here that sometimes hosts CFL games.
First off, I measured the whole length of the field. From one end of the end zone to the other, this thing is 150 yards long. That’s like, one and a half American football fields! I paced it out, end to end, and let me tell you, it’s a hike.
- Length: 150 yards (450 feet) end to end.
Then I wanted to see how wide it was. I stretched the measuring tape across the width, and it came out to 65 yards. Again, wider than what I’m used to. I walked it, counting my steps, to get a real feel for the size.
- Width: 65 yards (195 feet).
Now, the interesting part is those end zones. They’re huge! I measured each one, and they’re both 20 yards deep. I thought to myself, that’s double the size of American football end zones, that’s just crazy! Those guys have so much room to work with when they’re trying to score.
- End Zones: 20 yards deep each.
And the field between the end zones, the actual playing area where most of the action happens, that’s 110 yards long.
- Playing Area: 110 yards between goal lines.
I also noticed these lines they call “hash marks”. They’re 24 yards in from each sideline and go all the way down the field from goal line to goal line. I didn’t really measure those, but they seemed important, I guess for positioning or something. It’s interesting how it divides the field into these sections. I even paced those out too, just to get a feel for the distance.
So yeah, after spending an afternoon measuring and walking around, I have a newfound appreciation for the sheer size of a CFL football field. It’s massive! Those players must be in incredible shape to run up and down that thing all game. It was a fun little project, and I definitely learned something new about the game.
