Alright, let’s talk about my recent adventure in the Johto region, specifically focusing on Ground-type Pokemon. I’ve always had a soft spot for these earthy creatures, so I decided to do a little experiment and see how far I could get using only Ground-types in my team.

First things first, I needed to assemble my squad. I started my journey, you know, like we all do, and caught a Geodude right outside New Bark Town. This little fella became my starter, and let me tell you, it was tough going at first. Rock and Ground are not exactly the best combo against those early-game Grass and Water-types, but we pushed through.
Next up, I headed to Violet City and snagged a Sandshrew from Route 31. This was a game-changer. Sandshrew’s pure Ground typing gave me an edge against the Flying-type gym leader, Falkner. Took a few tries, had to grind a bit, but we eventually took him down.
- Caught a Geodude near New Bark Town.
- Got a Sandshrew from Route 31.
- Beat Falkner, the Flying-type gym leader, with Sandshrew.
The Real Challenge Begins
As I moved further into the game, I was on the lookout for more Ground-type pals. I went south, explored a bit, and found a Phanpy in the Safari Zone. Man, that Safari Zone is a pain, but it was worth it. Phanpy eventually evolved into Donphan, which was a beast!
Then came the real challenge – Whitney and her Miltank. That Rollout move was a nightmare for my team. I spent hours trying to figure out a way to counter it. Eventually, I decided to use my Geodude’s Magnitude to my advantage, hoping for a high roll. It was a gamble, but it paid off. After countless attempts, we finally took down that Miltank. I had to record the whole battle since it’s once in a lifetime, and I shared that to my friends and family.
- Found a Phanpy in the Safari Zone, which evolved into a strong Donphan.
- Struggled against Whitney’s Miltank and its Rollout move.
- Finally beat Whitney using Geodude’s Magnitude.
After that, the rest of the journey was relatively smooth. I caught a few more Ground-types like a Wooper and a Gligar, filling out my team. My Ground-type squad crushed the other gym leaders.
Honestly, it was a really fun and challenging way to play through Johto. It forced me to think outside the box and come up with some creative strategies. If you’re looking for a unique way to experience these games, I highly recommend trying a mono-type run. It’s a blast!
