Alright, folks, let’s dive into my little project from today: figuring out player ratings for the Borussia Dortmund vs. RB Leipzig match. I’m no expert, but I love stats and wanted to see if I could do this myself.

Getting Started
First things first, I needed to actually watch the game. I mean, you can’t rate players without seeing them play, right? So, I settled in, grabbed some snacks, and focused on the match. It was a pretty intense game, with lots of back-and-forth action.
Taking Notes – Lots of ‘Em!
Next up, I made sure have a notepad and pen ready. I scribbled down notes on pretty much every player. Stuff like:
- Good passes: Who was connecting well with their teammates?
- Shots on target: Who was getting close to scoring (or actually scoring!)?
- Tackles and interceptions: Who was winning the ball back for their team?
- Mistakes: Any bad passes, missed tackles, or general blunders?
- overall contributions: Who looks energetic?
I tried to be as objective as possible, but hey, I’m only human. It’s tough to catch everything, especially when the game gets fast-paced.
The Rating Game
After the final whistle, I had a page full of messy notes. Now for the hard part – assigning actual numbers! I went with a simple 1-10 scale, with 10 being “world-class performance” and 1 being “better luck next time.”
I started by thinking about the standout players. Who really made a difference? Those guys got the higher ratings (think 7, 8, or even a 9 if they were truly exceptional). Then I looked at the players who had a rough game – maybe they gave away possession a lot or missed crucial tackles. Those were the lower scores (3, 4, or maybe a 5 if they had a few good moments).
Most players, though, fall somewhere in the middle. They did their job, maybe had a few good moments and a few not-so-good moments. Those guys ended up with 5s and 6s.
The Final Result (My Opinion!)
After carefully reviewing my notes, I’m going to give my rating.
Please note that this is only my personal opinion and I am not a professional.

- BVB player A:7
- BVB player B:6
- BVB player C:5
- RBL player A:8
- RBL player B:6
- RBL player C:7
Wrap-up
It was a fun experiment! It definitely made me appreciate how much work goes into those player ratings you see online and in newspapers. It’s not as easy as it looks! Would I do it again? Probably! It’s a great way to really engage with a match and think critically about how each player contributes.
