Well, let me tell you ’bout this Chris Evert and Jimmy Connors, you know, those tennis stars from back in the day. Folks called ’em a “lovebird double,” whatever that means. Sounded fancy, I reckon.

The Early Days and Big Wins
So, these two young’uns, Chris and Jimmy, they were somethin’ else on the tennis court. Real good, like nothin’ you ever seen. They both won Wimbledon in ’74. That’s a big deal, like winnin’ the county fair pie contest, but bigger, I guess. And everyone was makin’ a fuss ’cause they got engaged too. Young love, you know, it’s all sunshine and roses at first. They was the “it couple,” the papers said. Like them movie stars, all glitzy and whatnot.
Planning a Wedding, Then… Not
They planned to get hitched in November of ’74. Set a date and everything. But then, poof! It all went south. Wedding got called off. Nobody really knew why for a long, long time. Kept it all hush-hush, those two. Folks gossiped, you know how it is. Whispers and rumors flyin’ around like flies on a hot summer day. Some said this, some said that. But nobody really knew the truth.
- Big tennis stars
- Engaged to be married
- Wedding called off suddenly
Years Later, the Truth Comes Out (Sort Of)
Now, years later, Jimmy, he writes this book, an “autobiography,” they call it. Fancy word for tellin’ your life story, I reckon. And in that book, he spills some beans, talks about what happened with Chris. Says she was gonna have a baby, but then… well, she didn’t. That’s what he said, anyways. And that’s why the wedding got called off, accordin’ to him. Don’t know if it’s the whole truth, mind you. There’s always two sides to every story, like that ol’ coin my grandpa used to carry.
Still Friends After All These Years
But here’s the kicker, you know? Even though they didn’t get married, even after all that drama, they stayed friends. Can you believe it? Best friends, even! Live close to each other down in Florida, they do. Less than twenty minutes apart, I heard. Guess they figured out how to forgive and forget, or maybe just forget the bad parts. Life’s too short to hold onto grudges, I always say. Like that time old man Johnson borrowed my lawnmower and brought it back busted. I was mad, sure, but what good does it do to stay mad forever?

Chris and Her Cancer Battle
And speaking of Chris, she had a tough time lately, poor thing. Got that cancer, you know. Scary stuff, that cancer. But she fought it, tough as nails she is, and beat it. Chemotherapy and all that. Glad she’s okay now. Life throws you curveballs, that’s for sure. You just gotta keep swingin’ the bat, even when you’re scared. And Chris, she swung that bat hard and knocked that cancer right outta the park.
Chris and Martina: Another Friendship Story
And you know what else? Chris, she’s real good friends with another tennis player, Martina Navratilova. They used to be rivals on the court, battlin’ it out for the championships. But then they became friends, real close friends. Funny how life works, ain’t it? One minute you’re fightin’ tooth and nail, the next you’re sharin’ secrets and laughin’ together. Reminds me of that time me and old lady Higgins had a feud over the prize-winning zucchini at the county fair, and then we ended up bein’ best pals. Goes to show, you never know what life’s gonna throw at you.
So, that’s the story of Chris and Jimmy, as best as I can tell it. Love, heartbreak, friendship, sickness, and all that. Just like real life, I guess, only with more tennis and fancy folks.
