Getting Started – What even makes fog?
First off, I had no real clue. Is it a weather thing? A block? I started digging through the creative menu, just typing ‘fog’, ‘mist’, ‘smoke’. Didn’t get any obvious hits for a ‘fog machine’ right away. My first thought was maybe using semi-transparent blocks, like gray stained glass or something similar.
So, I tried that. Stacked up a load of light gray glass panes in an area. It kinda worked? Sort of? From a distance, it blurred things a bit, but up close it just looked like, well, a bunch of glass panes. Not really the rolling fog effect I pictured. It felt too solid, too blocky. Scrapped that idea pretty quick.
Experimenting with Particles
Then I remembered some blocks make particle effects. Campfires make smoke, torches make smoke… maybe something like that? I looked for blocks that seemed ‘atmospheric’. Found something called an ‘Ethereal Diffuser’. Sounded promising. The recipe wasn’t too bad, needed some Glowstone Dust and a couple of Amethyst Shards, I think.
I crafted one and plunked it down. It started emitting these faint, white sparkly particles. Interesting, but definitely not fog. More like magical glitter dust. Pretty, but not what I was after.
Okay, back to the drawing board. What else makes particles? I messed around with water and lava meeting, creating steam/smoke, but that was messy and hard to control. Not practical for a large area.
The ‘Aha!’ Moment – Hidden Settings?
I started thinking maybe it wasn’t a block I place, but a setting? I went into the world settings, looked through graphics options. Found stuff for clouds, sky color, render distance, but nothing explicitly called ‘Fog’.
This is where I stumbled onto it. I was messing with the render distance slider, pulling it way down. And suddenly, the distant chunks weren’t just disappearing, they were fading into this kind of gray haze. The lower the render distance, the closer and thicker this haze got!
It wasn’t perfect ‘fog’ like from a machine, more like atmospheric perspective haze, but it definitely gave that foggy, low-visibility feel, especially if I set the render distance really low, like down to 4 or 6 chunks.

Refining the ‘Fog’
So, the trick seemed to be manipulating the render distance. It’s not ideal because it limits how far you can see, obviously, but for creating a foggy zone or mood, it worked surprisingly well.

- Higher Render Distance: Pushes the ‘fog’ further away, making it thinner or non-existent nearby.
I found that setting it around 5-8 chunks gave a decent balance. You could still navigate okay, but anything further out got obscured by this grayness. It looked best during dawn or dusk in the game, when the lighting was already a bit muted. Adding some tall trees or structures also helped break up the view and made the limited visibility feel more natural.
Final Thoughts
So, yeah. Making ‘fog’ in Infinity Craft, for me, ended up being less about placing a specific block and more about tweaking the game’s rendering settings. It’s a bit of a cheat, maybe? But it creates that low-visibility, hazy effect quite effectively, especially for screenshots or setting a mood in a specific area you’re building.
It’s not like deployable, localized fog from a machine, which would be cool. It’s a global effect tied to how much of the world the game draws. But hey, it worked for what I wanted – making my swamp build feel a bit more mysterious. Just gotta play around with that render distance slider until it feels right for you.
