Okay, so, you know how there’s always that one thing that really gets under your skin? For some people, it’s chewing with their mouths open. For others, it’s that annoying coworker who won’t stop tapping their pen. But for me? It’s the “horns down” thing at University of Oklahoma games. Seriously, I had to figure this out.
So, I started digging around. Turns out, this whole “horns down” business is a way to poke fun at the University of Texas Longhorns. See, Texas fans, they do this “Hook ’em Horns” hand sign, you know, like a longhorn steer. It is kind of their thing when their teams do something good.
Well, folks at OU, they decided to turn that upside down, literally. Making the “horns down” sign is their way of saying, “Not so fast, Longhorns!”
So I went to a game. The whole time, everyone’s doing the “horns down” thing, and it is actually really funny. There were some kids, all decked out in OU gear, and they are just loving it. Every time Texas messed up, there they go, flipping those horns upside down and just laughing.
- I took some pictures.
- I even tried to interview a few fans. Most of them just yelled something about “Boomer Sooner” and ran off.
- But one older guy, he told me he’s been doing the “horns down” thing for like 50 years. 50 years!
The Result
So, yeah, the “horns down” thing at OU games? It’s a whole thing. It’s meant to irritate Texas fans, and honestly, I got it. It is kind of the best, most hilarious way to do it. And you know what? After seeing it all in person, I started doing it, too. It’s just too much fun to pass up.
So, next time you see someone doing the “horns down” thing, don’t get mad. Just remember, it’s all part of the fun and games, and maybe even give it a try yourself.
