Alright, let’s talk about finding names for female clerics. I hit this wall recently working on a character concept. You’d think it’d be easy, right? Just slap a vaguely fantasy-sounding name on her. But it never feels quite right.

So, first thing I did, like most people probably, was hit up those online fantasy name generators. Click, click, click. Got lists of names, sure. But they all felt… generic? Like they could be for any elf archer or human warrior. Nothing screamed ‘cleric’ to me. They lacked that specific feel I was looking for. Some sounded too harsh, others too flowery, none really fit the image I had in my head of this particular character.
Digging a Bit Deeper
I realized the generic approach wasn’t cutting it. I needed to think about what kind of cleric she was. Was she the quiet, devoted healer type? Or more of a righteous, shield-maiden sort? Maybe a bit mystical? Her background mattered too. Where did she come from? What tradition?
Thinking about that helped narrow things down. I started looking for names with specific meanings. Stuff related to light, faith, healing, protection, wisdom. That felt more productive. Instead of just random sounds, I was looking for names that actually meant something relevant.
I also poked around historical names, you know, saints and figures like that. Found some interesting ones, but a lot of the common ones felt a bit too… on the nose, maybe? Or just names I already knew too well. I wanted something that felt unique to my character, not just pulled from a history book directly.
My Little System
What ended up working better for me was a mix. I started jotting down sounds and syllables I liked, ones that felt gentle or strong depending on the vibe I wanted. Then I looked at names with meanings related to faith or virtue, like I mentioned. Sometimes I’d blend things. Maybe take a traditional name and tweak the spelling slightly, or find a name from a less common source language that had the right sound and meaning.
It became less about finding a pre-made list and more about building the name piece by piece, thinking about the character’s core.
Here are a few examples that came out of that process, just to give you an idea of what I landed on or considered:
- Anya: Simple, felt kind of gentle, means ‘grace’. Good for a healer type.
- Seraphina: Bit more grand, relates to seraphs/angels, felt right for a more divinely connected cleric.
- Brigid: Has that strong, almost fiery feel, connected to an old goddess/saint figure. Good for a more protective or justice-focused cleric.
- Elara: Sounded nice, means ‘light’, straightforward but pretty.
- Verity: Directly means ‘truth’, good for a character focused on righteousness or uncovering deception.
These aren’t perfect for everyone, obviously. They just came out of my fiddling around. It was more about the process, thinking about the character’s role and feeling, rather than just grabbing the first name off a list.

So yeah, that was my little adventure into cleric names. Took a bit more digging than I first thought, but focusing on the character’s specifics rather than just ‘fantasy name’ really helped me find something that felt right. Maybe that approach helps someone else out there stuck on the same thing.
