My Afternoon with Big Papi
So, I got this urge the other day. You know how it is, sometimes you just get a thought stuck in your head? Mine was about baseball cards, specifically David Ortiz ones from Topps. Big Papi. Man, what a player. Anyway, I decided to actually do something about it, not just think.

First thing, I had to find my old card boxes. They weren’t exactly organized, let’s be honest. Spent a good hour just digging through dusty containers in the closet. Piles of commons, some forgotten inserts, the usual stuff. It’s funny what you hang onto.
Then I started the real hunt. I was specifically looking for Ortiz cards made by Topps. Pulled out stacks, flipping through them one by one. Saw a lot of familiar faces from the 2000s. It’s like a time machine, really. Took me back.
Found a few base cards, nothing too wild at first. Then, tucked between a couple of utility infielders, there it was. A 2004 Topps Ortiz. Not the fanciest card, not a rookie or anything super valuable, probably. But it was that year, you know? World Series champs. The card itself showed him mid-swing, looking powerful. Classic Ortiz.
- Pulled it out carefully.
- Looked it over. Corners were okay, not perfect, but decent.
- Remembered watching those games. The comeback. Unbelievable.
I didn’t run to check its price online or anything like that. That wasn’t the point of this little exercise. I just sat with the card for a bit. Put it in a fresh penny sleeve and then a top loader I had lying around. Felt right to give it a bit more protection after finding it again.
It just felt good, you know? Connecting with a piece of history, a player I really admired. Sometimes just taking the time to handle these old cards, remember the moments, that’s the whole point. It wasn’t about finding treasure, just about spending some time with a memory. Put it on my desk for now, a little reminder of a great player and some great baseball moments.
