Okay, so today I wanted to try and recreate Dustin Johnson’s iron swing. I mean, the guy’s a machine, right? His swing looks so effortless, yet he bombs it. I figured, “Why not give it a shot?”
So, first things first, I grabbed my clubs and headed out to the driving range. I warmed up a bit, just some easy swings to get the blood flowing. I’m no pro, so I knew this was going to be a challenge. I mean, I watched a bunch of videos online that break down Dustin’s swing, but it’s one thing to watch it, another to actually do it. They mention things like grip and keeping your wrist flexed, which sounded easy enough in theory.
I started with my grip. I tried to copy what I saw in the videos. Then came the backswing. I focused on keeping it smooth, not rushing it. I then concentrated on keeping my wrist flexed and downswing. This is where things got tricky. My natural instinct was to just whack the ball, but I tried to maintain that wrist angle they talked about. It felt awkward, to be honest, like I was fighting my own body. Then I swung forward. I tried to keep my body moving towards the target, rotating my chest as I’d seen in one video.
- First few swings? Total duds. Topped a couple, chunked a few. Not pretty. It felt nothing like Dustin’s fluid motion.
- But I kept at it, trying to feel the swing, not just see it in my head. I adjusted my grip a little, loosened up my arms, and focused on that smooth tempo.
Then, bam! I connected with one. It wasn’t a Dustin-level bomb, but it felt solid. The ball flew straighter and further than usual. I was stoked! I hit a few more, trying to replicate that feeling. Some were good, some were, well, not so good.
It’s definitely a work in progress. I realized from a video that I watched that I need to focus on the target. As I finished my swing, I tried to get my chest pointing towards it. I spent hours on this one day. Not sure how long I was there. I just know that I was determined to make progress, even just a little bit.
I learned that mimicking a pro swing is tough! But breaking it down into smaller parts and practicing each one definitely helps. I’m not going to be hitting 300-yard drives anytime soon, but I feel like I’m on the right track. I’m gonna keep working on this, and maybe, just maybe, I’ll add a few extra yards to my iron shots. Who knows, maybe I’ll even start looking a little bit like Dustin out there! (A guy can dream, right?)
