Alright guys, so I was playing MLB The Show 23 the other day, and I kept seeing this “hold” stat pop up. I was like, “What the heck is a hold?” I’d heard of saves, of course, but holds were new to me. So, I decided to do some digging.

My Investigation Begins
First, I fired up the game itself. I figured maybe there was a tutorial or something in there that I’d missed. I poked around the menus, checked the in-game help, but no dice. Nothing specifically about holds.
Okay, plan B. Time to hit the internet. I jumped on my browser.
The Aha! Moment
I typed in “what is a hold in mlb the show 23” into the search bar.
So, what did I find out, After searching, I put together that is, a “hold” is kind of like a save for middle relievers.
- You gotta come into the game in a save situation.
- You gotta record at least one out.
- You gotta leave the game with your team still winning.
- You can’t finish the game, that’s for the closer.
- And, obviously, you can’t blow the lead, or no hold for you.
Basically, it’s a way to give credit to those relievers who come in and keep the team ahead, setting things up for the closer to, well, close it out.
Putting It to the Test
Armed with this new knowledge, I went back to the game. I started a new Franchise mode game, paid close attention to my bullpen usage. I made sure to bring in my middle relievers in those tight, late-inning situations. And sure enough, I started seeing those holds rack up!
It’s pretty cool, actually. It makes you think more strategically about how you use your pitchers. You’re not just throwing guys out there; you’re thinking about who can hold the lead and who’s best suited to get those final three outs.
So, there you have it. That’s my little journey into understanding holds in MLB The Show 23. Hope this helps someone else out there who was as confused as I was!
