Alright, let’s gab about this DQ thing with Matt Hamill. You know, that fight where Jon Jones got himself disqualified. People keep jabberin’ ‘bout it, so I figured I’d put in my two cents, like, what really happened, you know?
So, what exactly went down? Well, it was back in December 2009, at somethin’ called The Ultimate Fighter finale. This Jon Jones fella, he was fightin’ Matt Hamill. Now, Jon Jones, some folks say he’s like a Kung-Fu fighter or somethin’. Matt, he was workin’ with a boxin’ coach, Tim Green, at that Mohawk Valley Mixed Martial Arts gym. Anyways, they’re in the cage, and things get messy.
From what I hear, Jon was throwin’ all sorts of elbows, real nasty stuff. And Matt, bless his heart, he was takin’ a beatin’. People say Matt did a whole heap of damage to Jon’s elbows, shoulda been a TKO win right then and there for Matt, but that ref, Steve Mazzagatti, he didn’t stop it. And then, bam! Jon starts hittin’ Matt with these downward elbows, 12-to-6 elbows they call ‘em. And those? Those are against the rules, plain and simple.
- The fight itself was a mess. Folks keep arguin’ about whether the ref shoulda stopped it earlier. Some say Steve Mazzagatti’s a terrible ref, and maybe they’re right. But the rules are the rules, and those 12-to-6 elbows ain’t allowed.
- Then there’s this talk about overturnin’ the decision. Heard some fella, Andy Foster from the California State Athletic Commission, he’s supportin’ overturnin’ that loss on Jon Jones’ record. Says it’s the only loss he’s got. Well, I say, rules are rules. You break ‘em, you pay the price.
Now, some folks are sayin’ Matt actually headbutted Jon, and that’s why Jon started with them illegal elbows. They say it was a 6-12 headbutt, another illegal move, and that the whole decision should be overturned. But honestly, I don’t know about all that. All I know is what I saw, and what I heard. And what I saw was Jon usin’ them illegal elbows.
So, what’s the big deal? Why are folks still talkin’ about this? Well, for one, Jon Jones went on to become a big star, one of the best they say. But this DQ, it’s always there, hangin’ over him like a dark cloud. And Matt Hamill, he’s kinda like the forgotten man in all this. He got the win, but it wasn’t a real win, you know? It was a DQ, and that ain’t the same as beatin’ someone fair and square.
And let me tell you somethin’, bein’ a fighter ain’t easy. These fellas, they put their bodies on the line, they train hard, they sacrifice a lot. And when you get in that cage, you expect the rules to be followed. When they ain’t, well, it just ain’t right.
In the end, it’s a whole lot of he-said, she-said. Some folks think Matt shoulda won by TKO. Some think Jon shoulda won. Some think the whole thing should be a no-contest. Me? I just think it’s a shame it ended the way it did. Matt deserved better, and Jon, well, he learned a lesson that day, even if some folks wanna pretend it didn’t happen.
Looking forward to the rematch? I heard some people talking about that. But honestly, it’s been years. Folks get older, they move on. Maybe it’s best to just leave it in the past. But if they do fight again, well, I hope they do it fair and square, no more of this DQ business.
So that’s my two cents on this whole DQ thing. It ain’t pretty, it ain’t clean, but it’s what happened. And sometimes, that’s just the way life is.
