Alright, so today I’m diving into something I was messing around with earlier: Ostapenko vs. Azarenka Head-to-Head stats. Figured I’d share how I went about digging into that.

First off, I just straight up googled “Ostapenko vs Azarenka head to head”. Obvious, right? But you gotta start somewhere. A bunch of tennis stats sites popped up, like Tennis Abstract and a couple of others. I clicked through a few, looking for one that laid out the info cleanly.
Tennis Abstract seemed to have the most detailed breakdown. It showed their matches, the dates, the tournaments, who won, and even the scores. Pretty handy.
I noticed the data wasn’t always consistent across the different sites I checked. So, I decided to cross-reference. I basically opened up a spreadsheet (Google Sheets, nothing fancy) and started plugging in the match results from Tennis Abstract. Then I double-checked each match against another site to make sure the winner and date were correct.
Next, I wanted to see if there were any patterns. Like, did one player dominate on a certain surface? So I added columns in my spreadsheet for “Surface” (Hard, Clay, Grass) and “Tournament Type” (Grand Slam, WTA 1000, etc.). Then I manually filled those in based on the match info from the sites.
After that, I just started tallying things up. How many times did Ostapenko win on hard courts? How many Grand Slam matches did Azarenka win against her? Simple COUNTIF formulas in Google Sheets did the trick. It was a bit tedious, but it got the job done.
To visualize the data a bit, I made a few simple charts. A pie chart showing the overall head-to-head record, and a bar chart comparing their wins on different surfaces. Nothing groundbreaking, but it made the stats a little easier to grasp.
One thing I realized is that head-to-head stats are just one piece of the puzzle. You also gotta consider things like current form, injuries, and even the specific conditions of the match. Stats don’t tell the whole story, but they’re a good starting point.
Anyway, that’s basically it. A bit of googling, a spreadsheet, and some simple formulas. Not exactly rocket science, but it was a fun little data dive. Maybe I’ll look into their performance against other top players next time.
