Getting Ready for Yan vs. Song
So, I heard about this Petr Yan versus Song Yadong fight coming up. Been following Yan for a while, you know? Guy’s a machine, usually. Song Yadong, though, he’s been making noise. Young gun, hungry. Thought to myself, this one’s gonna be good. Couldn’t miss it.

Had to figure out the timing first. These things are always on at weird hours depending where you are. Found out it was part of a bigger card, UFC 299, if I remember right. Cleared my schedule for that evening. Told the family, “Hey, gotta watch the fights tonight.” Luckily, they’re used to it by now.
The Viewing Setup
My process for fight night is pretty standard, practiced it loads of times. First, gotta make sure the stream is working. Tested it earlier in the day. Nothing worse than scrambling right when the main card starts, right? Then, snacks. Went simple this time. Some chips, maybe some nuts. Didn’t want anything too messy.
Pulled up my usual chair, the comfy one. Dimmed the lights a bit. Phone on silent – mostly. Might check scores for other stuff, but no calls, no texts buzzing non-stop. Just wanted to focus on the action. The lead-up fights were okay, some good finishes, but really, I was waiting for Yan and Song.
Watching the Action Unfold
When they finally walked out, man, the energy felt different. Yan looked serious, like always. Song seemed pretty calm, actually. The first round started, and bam! They were trading right away. No feeling out process really. Both guys throwing hard.
I remember thinking Yan’s boxing looked sharp, but Song was landing some heavy kicks. It went back and forth. Honestly, it wasn’t the wild brawl some folks might have expected. More technical. Yan trying to pressure, Song using movement and those kicks.
- Round 1: Pretty close, maybe edged Yan? Hard to tell.
- Round 2: Song seemed to find his rhythm a bit more. Landed some good shots.
- Round 3: Yan really started pushing, trying to secure the win. Looked like the old Yan in flashes.
It went the distance. You sit there, watching, holding your breath on the close exchanges. You kind of get lost in it. Forget about the snacks, forget about everything else. Just watching two guys give it their all.
After the Bell
When the final bell rang, I wasn’t sure who took it. It was close. Really close. Sat back in my chair, just processing. Then they read the decision. Yan got the nod. Unanimous, I think? Yeah.
Felt good for Yan, bouncing back. But gotta give props to Song too. He stood right there with one of the best. Showed he belonged.

You know, watching these things, it reminds me sometimes… it’s not always about the crazy knockout. Sometimes it’s about the grind, the adjustments, just sticking in there when things get tough. Like this one time, years ago, working on a project at my old job. We hit this massive roadblock, felt like we were getting battered, round after round. Everyone was getting tired, frustrated. But we just kept plugging away, making small adjustments, communicating, pushing forward inch by inch. Didn’t feel glorious at the time, just hard work. We eventually got it done. It wasn’t a spectacular finish, just a gritty decision win, you know? Watching Yan grind out that win kind of brought that back. It’s the grind sometimes. Anyway, that was my Saturday night sorted. Good fight.
