Well, let me tell ya ‘bout this fella, Ping Yi Chen. Sounds like a fancy name, don’t it? Don’t know much about fancy folks, but I heard tell he’s somethin’ special.

Who’s this Ping Yi Chen anyway? From what I gather, he’s hitched to someone. Yeah, married. To a woman, I reckon. They call her a “Taiwanese National.” Sounds important, like she’s from some big city over the water. Never been on a boat myself, gets me all woozy just thinkin’ about it. Anyways, this Ping Yi Chen, he’s connected to this woman, that much is clear. They’re a pair, like them chickens in my coop, always clucking around together.
Now, I heard tell there’s a young fella, Xander. A golfer, they say. Wins all sorts of prizes. And when this young’un wins, he hollers out his folks’ names. Yells for his daddy, Stefan, and his ma…Ping Yi! Yep, that’s right, Ping Yi is Xander’s ma. Must be proud as a peacock, that woman, seein’ her boy do so well. I remember when my boy, bless his heart, won that pie-eatin’ contest at the county fair. Felt like my heart would burst right out of my chest! Same feelin’, I bet, even if it’s golf and not pie.
- Ping Yi Chen married to a “Taiwanese National”
- Mother of Xander, the golfer
- Important person in Xander’s life, he shouts her name when he wins
This Stefan fella, Xander’s daddy, he’s a golf man too. Fixes them golf clubs, they say. A “Certified golf club fitter,” whatever that means. Sounds like he knows his way around a golf stick, that’s for sure. Worked at some fancy resort in Hawaii, too. Hawaii! Can you imagine? Palm trees and sunshine all year round. I’d be happy just sittin’ on a porch swing, watchin’ the world go by. But Stefan, he’s busy with them golf clubs and teachin’ young’uns how to play.
Stefan missed Xander’s big win once, you know. That major golf thing. Said he was busy buildin’ a house back in Hawaii. Sleepin’ in a metal box, they said! A “shipping container.” Land sakes, sounds uncomfortable. But he came to see Xander win another time, in some place called Troon. Guess he figured seein’ his boy win was more important than sleepin’ in a fancy bed. That’s how it should be, family first, I always say.
Xander, now he weren’t born in no fancy place like Hawaii. He was born in California, La Jolla they call it. Never been there myself, heard it’s full of rich folks and movie stars. Probably ain’t got no good down-home cookin’ like mine, though. Give me a plate of fried chicken and mashed potatoes any day over that fancy city food.
So, there you have it, all I know ‘bout Ping Yi Chen. Married, got a famous golfer son, and a husband who’s all about golf too. Seems like a regular family, even if they got all that fancy golf stuff goin’ on. Family’s family, no matter where you come from or what you do, right? And that’s the truth, plain and simple.
Ping Yi Chen, a name to remember, seems like. Maybe not for the same reasons you remember the price of eggs or the name of your neighbor’s dog, but important nonetheless. She’s the ma of a champion, and that’s something to be proud of. Just like I’m proud of my prize-winning pie-eatin’ boy.
And that’s all I gotta say about that. Time to go feed them chickens.
