Okay, so yesterday I decided to mess around with trying to mimic some pro golf swings. Figured, why not start with two guys who seem pretty chill and have swings that, to my untrained eye, look kinda achievable: Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler.

First, Spieth. I watched a bunch of slow-mo videos on YouTube – you know, the ones where they break down every little wrist hinge and hip turn. What I noticed was how fluid he is. Like, there’s no jerky movement, just a smooth transition from takeaway to impact.
- Takeaway: Tried to keep the clubhead outside my hands for longer. Usually, I pull it inside too quick.
- Top of Backswing: Focused on getting a full shoulder turn, but keeping my wrists relaxed. This was tough, felt like I was gonna over-rotate.
- Downswing: Here’s where things got messy. Spieth’s got that crazy lag, and I was trying to feel that whip. Ended up topping a few, shanking a few more.
- Impact: Tried to stay down and through the ball, extending my arms. Managed a few decent shots, but consistency was a big problem.
After about an hour of flailing around pretending to be Spieth, I switched gears to Fowler. His swing seems a bit more compact, a bit more controlled, maybe? That’s what I thought anyway.
- Setup: Fowler’s got that wide stance, so I widened mine a bit. Also tried to get a little more knee bend.
- Backswing: His backswing is shorter than Spieth’s, so I tried to limit my turn. Felt like I wasn’t generating enough power.
- Transition: This is where I focused the most. Fowler’s transition is so smooth, almost effortless. I tried to feel that same smoothness, but mostly just ended up feeling awkward.
- Follow-through: He finishes high, with the club wrapped around his back. I tried to copy that, but it felt kinda forced.
Honestly, trying to copy both swings back-to-back was probably a bad idea. I got all confused and started blending them together into some Frankenstein swing of my own creation. Most of my shots were either sliced into the woods or skulled across the green.
What I learned: These guys are pros for a reason! Their swings look easy, but there’s so much going on that you just don’t see at first glance. I definitely need to work on my fundamentals before I start trying to emulate the pros. Maybe I should just stick to hitting it straight for now, instead of trying to look cool while hitting it crooked.
Next Steps: Probably gonna go back to basics and work on my grip and posture. Maybe watch some videos on those things instead of trying to be Jordan Spieth or Rickie Fowler. Baby steps, right?
