Okay, so I got really into the Masters this year, and I had this burning question: What’s the actual average total score at the Masters? Like, not just what some pro could shoot, but what players really shoot, on average, over all four rounds.

I figured, someone, somewhere, must have this data. So I started digging.
My Data Hunt
First, I tried the obvious. I scoured the official Masters website. I figured they’d have some deep stats archive, but honestly, I couldn’t find anything easily. Maybe it’s buried in there, but I’m no internet sleuth.
Then I hit up Google. I searched for things like “historical Masters scores,” “average Masters score,” and “Masters total score data.” I found some articles talking about winning scores, course records, and stuff like that, but nothing that just gave me a simple, straightforward average.
I was starting to get a little frustrated. It felt like this should be a simple thing to find!
The Spreadsheet Solution
Then it hit me: I could just… make my own data! I mean, it would take some time, but how hard could it be, right? (Famous last words…)
I decided I have to find the data myself. I grab the historical tournament results, year by year. I only grabbed the players who made the cut (no point in averaging in those weekend DNFs, right?).
- Year-by-Year Data: I just put each player’s total score for each year. Simple enough.
- Calculating the Average: I used the AVERAGE function in the spreadsheet to calculate the average total score for each year.
- Overall Average: Then, I averaged those yearly averages to get a grand, overall average.
I won’t bore you with every single number, but I was pretty shocked. I kept going, year after year, plugging in scores. It took way longer than I thought it would. My fingers were starting to cramp!
Finally, I had my grand total average, a single number to represent the average total score at the Masters.

So, that’s my little data adventure. It wasn’t fancy, it wasn’t perfect, but it got me the answer I was looking for. And hey, I learned a thing or two about spreadsheets along the way!
