Okay, so I’ve been kicking around this idea of starting my own MMA gym for a while now. It’s a big dream, but hey, who doesn’t love a good challenge, right? I started jotting down everything I did, just so I wouldn’t forget the steps I took and maybe help someone else out there with the same crazy idea.
First things first, I spent a good chunk of time just researching the heck out of the MMA scene. Needed to know who’s who, what’s what, and where the heck I fit into all of this. I mean, you gotta know your battlefield before you jump in, you know?
Then came the fun part – brainstorming. I’m talking about sketching out what I wanted this gym to look like, feel like. What kind of people did I want to walk through those doors? Hardcore fighters? Weekend warriors? Both? I had to figure out my crowd.
Next up, I started scouting for locations. And let me tell you, finding the right spot is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. It’s gotta be just right – not too pricey, enough space, good area. I walked into so many places, my shoes almost gave out.
- Size – needed enough room for all the gear and for people to move around without bumping elbows.
- Accessibility – had to be easy to get to, otherwise, who’s gonna come?
- Price – this one’s a killer. Gotta balance the books, you know?
What I looked for in a location
After that, I dove into the legal stuff. Ugh, paperwork. But hey, it’s gotta be done. Making sure everything’s legit, from licenses to insurance. It’s a headache, but you don’t wanna mess around with this stuff.
Then, I started thinking about the gear. Mats, bags, gloves, all that jazz. It’s like being a kid in a candy store, but way more expensive. Had to make a list, check it twice, and figure out what’s essential and what can wait.
Hiring was the next big hurdle. Finding trainers who know their stuff and are good with people is like trying to catch lightning in a bottle. I interviewed a bunch of folks, trying to get a feel for who’d be a good fit for the vibe I’m aiming for.
Finally, I started spreading the word. Getting people hyped up, telling everyone about this awesome gym that’s about to open. Social media, word of mouth, you name it. It’s all about getting those first few members in the door.
It’s been a wild ride, and I’m probably still forgetting a bunch of stuff, but that’s the gist of it. Starting an MMA gym is no joke, but seeing it all come together, bit by bit, it’s pretty damn rewarding.
