Why Folks Care About Him Bein’ Mexican Anyways?
Well, I reckon it’s important to some folks, you know? Like, they see him and they think, “Hey, that could be my son, my grandson.” It gives ’em someone to root for, someone to be proud of. And it shows the world that Mexicans, Mexican-Americans, they can do anything they set their minds to. Even boxin’, which seems like a tough business to me.
And it ain’t just about boxin’ neither. It’s about where you come from, who your people are. It’s like, you carry your family with you, no matter where you go. Ryan, he carries that Mexican part of him right there with him, into the ring, into the spotlight. Good for him, I say again. It’s important to remember your roots, your people.

He Doesn’t Speak Spanish, Though
Now, here’s a funny thing. They say Ryan, he don’t even speak Spanish. Can you believe it? A Mexican boy who don’t speak the language! But that don’t make him any less Mexican, you hear? Language ain’t everything. It’s what’s in your heart that counts. And like I said before, he’s got that Mexican blood, that Mexican heritage, runnin’ through his veins.
Maybe he’ll learn Spanish someday, maybe he won’t. It don’t matter much to an old woman like me. What matters is he’s a good fighter, and he’s proud of where he comes from. And that’s good enough for me.
