Getting into the Weeds on Notre Dame QBs
You know, it’s funny how you get pulled into certain things. For me, really digging into the Notre Dame quarterback situation wasn’t something I planned. It just sort of happened. I think it started a few seasons back, maybe during one of those years where nobody was quite sure who’d take the snaps week to week. That uncertainty got me hooked.

So, what’s my “process”? Well, it’s nothing fancy. Mostly involves a lot of watching. I try to catch as many games as I can, obviously. But it’s more than just watching the ball. I started really focusing on the QB – how they handle pressure, their body language after a bad play, how the team seems to react to them. It tells you a lot more than just the stats sometimes.
Then comes the off-season grind, which is its own beast. Practice reports, spring game buzz, whispers about who’s looking good… you try to piece it all together. I’d find myself reading different takes, listening to folks talk about arm strength or decision-making. It’s like trying to solve a puzzle before the season even starts. You sift through a lot of noise, that’s for sure.
- Watching game replays, focusing just on the QB.
- Reading practice notes from different sources (carefully!).
- Trying to gauge team morale around the QB situation.
- Thinking back to past QBs and how they handled the pressure cooker that is playing QB for ND.
It’s not always straightforward. One guy looks great on paper, amazing stats in high school, but then the college game hits different. The speed, the complexity. And the pressure at Notre Dame, that’s a whole other level. You see guys with all the talent struggle, and sometimes you see guys you didn’t expect much from really step up. It keeps you guessing.
Honestly, it’s become a bit of a ritual for me. Pre-season, I’m looking at the roster, thinking about the competition. During the season, I’m analyzing every throw, every decision. Post-season, it’s reflecting on what worked, what didn’t, and who might be coming up next. It’s a cycle.
Sometimes I wonder why I spend so much time thinking about this one position on one team. But I guess it’s the centerpiece, right? So much hinges on that spot. And following the journey of these young guys, seeing who rises to the occasion, there’s just something compelling about it. Keeps me coming back year after year, trying to figure it all out again.
