Alright, so let’s talk about this flat putter grip thing. My putting, man, it was getting seriously frustrating. Felt like my hands were doing their own little dance on every stroke. Lots of pushes, some nasty pulls. Just inconsistent, you know? Costing me strokes every round, and it really started grinding my gears.

Trying Something New
I’d seen folks using these wider, flat-fronted grips. Looked kinda weird, honestly. Like holding a small plank of wood. But I was getting desperate. Read a bit online, saw some pros using them, figured what the heck. If it could quiet down my fidgety wrists, maybe it was worth a shot. Couldn’t get much worse, right?
So, I went down to the local golf shop. Picked one out – felt really odd in the hands just standing there in the aisle. Decided to just pull the trigger. Had the guy in the shop slap it on my trusty old putter. Took maybe ten minutes. Walking out, holding the putter felt completely different. Definitely a moment of ‘what have I done?’
Getting Used to It
First few putts on the practice green were… interesting. My hands didn’t know quite how to sit on it. The flat top is supposed to make you align your palms sort of facing each other, less likely to rotate. It felt restrictive at first. Like my hands were locked in place. Which, I guess, was the whole point.
I spent a good hour just rolling short ones, like 3-5 footers. Trying to get the feel.
- Focused on rocking my shoulders.
- Tried hard not to let my wrists hinge or flip.
- Just getting comfortable with the sensation.
It took some real conscious effort. My brain kept wanting to go back to the old way. Had to keep reminding myself: smooth tempo, quiet hands. It wasn’t magic overnight. Still hit some squirrely ones. But I could feel something different happening. The putter head felt a bit more stable through the stroke.
Practice and Results (So Far)
Over the next few weeks, I made a point to hit the putting green before every round, even if just for 15 minutes. And spent a couple of longer sessions just drilling. Pace putts, short ones, breaking putts. The works.
Slowly, it started to feel more natural. Less like I was fighting the grip and more like it was helping me. The biggest change? My misses got tighter. Fewer of those wild pushes or pulls. The ball seemed to start on line more often. Now, I’m not suddenly draining everything, let’s be real. Golf ain’t that easy.
But, I feel more confident standing over the ball. Especially on those shorter putts that used to give me fits. It feels like I’ve taken one variable – twitchy hands – somewhat out of the equation. My distance control also feels a little more repeatable, maybe because the stroke itself is simpler, less handsy.

Been using it for a couple of months solid now. There are still days the putter feels like a stranger, but mostly, it’s been a positive move. It forces me into what feels like a more fundamentally sound stroke. For me, anyway.
So yeah, that’s my journey with the flat putter grip. Took some work, felt weird as heck to start, but I’m sticking with it. Seems to be helping tame those jumpy hands of mine. If you’re struggling with the same thing, maybe give one a try. Couldn’t hurt, right?
