Alright, so today I decided to dive into NBA history and figure out which team holds the, uh, distinguished record for the worst 82-game season. You know, just for kicks. It’s not like I was avoiding doing laundry or anything…

First, I fired up my trusty search engine. I just typed in something simple like “worst NBA record 82-game season”. I figured that would get me in the ballpark.
The search results popped up pretty quick. I skimmed through a few of them, mostly sports news sites and some fan forums. You know how it is – lots of opinions flying around.
Digging Through the Data
I started to notice a few team names popping up more than others. And one name, in particular, kept appearing: the Charlotte Bobcats (who are now, thankfully for them, the Hornets again). I focused in on that.
- I found some articles specifically about that 2011-2012 Bobcats team. Oh boy.
- I checked and double-checked the numbers on a couple of different sites, just to be sure. I mean, you can’t always trust what you read on the internet, right?
- I confirmed that they went 7-59. Ouch.
That’s the confirmed record, 7 wins and 59 losses, in a lockout-shortened 66-game season. Then it hit me: 7-59 translates to an even worse winning percentage, in a standard full length 82-game season.
So, I did a rough estimate. Figured out that, proportionally, it would be around 9-73. The actual worst record is held by The 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers went 9-73.
I spent a good chunk of time reading about that Bobcats season. It was a rough one, folks. But hey, at least they’re not the Bobcats anymore! And, they don’t have that record!
